Homemade Moisturizers for Dry Skin

Dry skin is the bane of skincare and can occur due to a number of reasons. Thankfully, there are plenty of solutions to tackle this issue – from diet changes to skincare products. But what if you want to try something different? Did you know that you can have your own homemade moisturizers for dry skin? Most of these recipes involve natural ingredients and are quite effective (if not better) at treating dry skin.

What Causes Dry Skin?

Dry skin can be caused due to several factors like dehydration, using harsh soaps and face washes, not moisturizing regularly, skin diseases, and more. Dry weather conditions also play a big role. When the natural oils on your face are stripped away, the skin gets dry and tight in an unpleasant way. One way to combat this is of course to stay hydrated regularly and to eat a well-balanced diet. In some cases though, dry skin issues may require an additional boost through the use of moisturizers.

Although most moisturizing products being sold are considered relatively safe, they still come with a long list of unpronounceable chemicals. Many people are turning to creating their own homemade moisturizers for dry skin because it’s a more natural solution. And, to be honest, making the moisturizer yourself is half the fun!

3 Recipes for Homemade Moisturizers for Dry Skin

Here are three ways in which you can make a homemade moisturizer for dry skin:

1. Coconut Oil Mix

Mix half a cup of coconut oil with an equal amount of olive oil over a double boiler and then add a quarter cup of beeswax to the mix. Next, add a few drops of essential oils that you may have (lavender, sandalwood, vanilla, frankincense, etc.) and whip the mixture till a creamy texture is achieved. Store it in a glass jar and do not refrigerate.

How It Helps: Coconut oil is an emollient, which means it fits into the spaces between the cells of your skin and provides natural smoothness on the cellular level. Beeswax and olive oil are known to aid in the skin healing process, which is essential for reversing the damage caused when the skin dries. This is one of the simplest and easiest homemade moisturizers for dry skin and can be used even on sensitive skin like around the eyes and mouth.

2. Honey, Tea, and Glycerin

Take 1 teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice and add 2 teaspoons each of glycerin and green tea. Mix the ingredients well and apply the paste to the skin while massaging the area. Ensure proper coverage and leave it on your skin through the night. Rinse it well the next morning. As an alternative to glycerine, you can use petroleum jelly.

How It Helps: Both honey and glycerine naturally trap moisture, helping the skin stay hydrated and supple for long durations. Green tea may soothe your skin while also reducing the risk of infection and lemon juice is known to leave the skin brighter. If petroleum jelly is used, it can act as a protective layer, locking in moisture and giving your skin time to heal.

3. Almond, Cocoa butter, Honey, and Rosewater

This is one of the simplest homemade moisturizers for dry skin. First, add 2 tablespoons of cocoa butter to 1 tablespoon of almond oil over a double boiler. Transfer to a container and add 1 tablespoon of honey and a few drops of rosewater. Let it cool and use it at your convenience.

How It Helps: Honey has well-known healing properties – it fights against the damage that dry and itchy skin can cause. Almond oil and cocoa butter helps to keep your skin moisturized and well-nourished. Rosewater acts as a toner and cleanser.

Conclusion

As you can see, homemade moisturizers for dry skin are easy to make and effective at hydrating with the use of natural ingredients. You can alternatively use just one or two ingredients (such as coconut oil) as a replacement for store-bought moisturizers. The ultimate goal is to keep your skin happy and healthy. To achieve that, you’ll need good sleep, proper hydration, and a skincare routine that works for you. So don’t be afraid to try out multiple options till you find one that works best for you.
