While most of us keep track of water intake, we generally forget what material of drinking water bottles we are using. In almost every household, plastic water bottles are used, which can adversely affect human health. Moreover, these are not reusable water bottles and also impact the environment when disposed of.

Plastic water bottles are used and thrown bottles with an advisory to crush and destroy after use. It adds to more toxic waste and choked water streams. Let’s understand the health issues caused by plastic water bottles.

Health Issues Caused by Drinking Water in Plastic Water Bottles

Plastic drinking water bottles contain a very harmful chemical called BPA (Bisphenol A), which is hazardous to health. It causes many health issues that are discussed below:

Adverse Effect on the Immunological System

It is usually advised not to keep or consume water from plastic water bottles. It is because the toxins in plastic disrupt our immune systems through immunity cell dysfunction.

Cancerous and Reduction in Sperm Count

The presence of phthalates in plastic can cause problems such as direct attacks on the liver and cause issues in sperm counts in men. A recent study found high quantities of microplastics in cheap water bottles, particularly in popular brands.

BPA Generation

Bisphenol A, an oestrogen-mimicking chemical, can cause diabetes, obesity, fertility problems, behavioural issues, and early puberty in girls. It is best to avoid storing and drinking water from plastic water bottles.

Produces Dioxin

Plastic water bottles that are directly exposed to the sun have dangerous effects, such as releasing harmful chemicals that enhance the chances of breast cancer. One such chemical formulation is Dioxin, which causes irreparable damage to the human body.

Microplastics and How They are Harmful

During the production process, plastic water bottles are exposed to high pressure, temperature fluctuations, and transportation, which can result in the degradation of the plastic and the formation of microplastics. On average, a human can consume a minimum of 10,000 microplastics. Since these microplastics are consumed from many sources, the worst source yet is plastic drinking water bottles. It is always advised to use filtered tap water rather than consume packaged, non-reusable water bottles.

Alternatives to Plastic Water Bottles

Now that all the harmful impacts of plastics and their components are discussed, let’s learn about various alternatives available:

  • First and foremost, stainless steel drinking water bottles are the best choice. They are durable and reusable without any expiration of the materials used. They do not emit any chemical substances in water. Moreover, they keep the beverages hot or cold for longer.
  • The next best option for drinking water bottles compared to plastic water bottles is glass bottles. These reusable water bottles are non-porous and do not contain any odour. These bottles have no hazardous chemicals, so they can be used for many different purposes. However, since they are made of glass, you need to handle them carefully.
  • If you still prefer plastic bottles, check for the tag or mark that says BPA-free. These are eco-friendly water bottles and are less harmful than the BPA-containing ones.
  • You should refrain from buying plastic water bottles; instead, install a water filter for pure and clean drinking water. It will reduce the usage of cheap water bottles made from plastic.

Tips to Avoid Plastic Water Bottles

No matter how much we know about plastic bottles and how they harm us, we still tend to buy them due to their affordable costs. The following are some tips to avoid plastic water bottles:

  • When considering whether plastic water bottles are safe for drinking water, weighing the benefits and risks is essential.
  • Using a water bottle with times marking can help you stay hydrated throughout the day, but the safety of the material is crucial. Refrain from using plastic water bottles. If you still have to buy a plastic bottle, choose a BPA-free one.
  • Many people are turning to eco-friendly water bottles made from materials like stainless steel or glass to avoid the potential health risks associated with plastic.
  • While cheap water bottles might be more affordable, they often lack higher-quality options’ durability and safety features. Therefore, investing in a safer, more sustainable bottle can improve your health and the environment.

Takeaway

Besides the negative consequences for your health, plastic water bottles are unhealthy for your surroundings. Most plastic garbage disrupts marine life and generates terrestrial contamination, resulting in landfills and water contamination. Better quality, BPA-free, reusable, and more eco-friendly choices are steel flasks, glass bottles, stainless steel bottles, or aluminium bottles.
