Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

The best way to nourish the baby is to watch what the mother is eating during pregnancy. There is a list of scientifically proven food items that are safe and those that must be avoided. Here is a list of food to avoid during pregnancy:

1. Caffeine

Caffeine is absorbed very quickly by the human body and easily passes into the placenta. As the baby has not developed the enzyme needed to process caffeine, there is a high build up in his/her body. This increase in caffeine limits the growth of the fetus and also causes low birth weight during the time of delivery. Also, caffeine constricts the blood vessels of the placenta, leading to reduction of the blood supply to the fetus which may contribute to growth inhibition. Low birth weight can cause chronic illnesses or even infant death. Pregnant women are advised to restrict their daily caffeine consumption to 200 mg per day.

2. Raw Fish

This is a hard one for sushi lovers. Raw fish must be avoided during pregnancy as it causes infections. Some of these infections might only affect the mother, while the others can be passed on to the fetus, leading to serious and sometimes fatal consequences.

3. Raw Eggs

Raw and undercooked eggs can cause salmonella. Sometimes, salmonella can cause uterine cramps, leading to premature birth or even stillbirth. Poached eggs, homemade mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, and homemade ice cream should be avoided. This is one of the main pregnancy foods to avoid.

4. Pineapples

Pregnant women, especially those in the first trimester, must avoid pineapples as they can cause miscarriage. Pineapple contains an enzyme which softens the cervix, resulting in early labour.

5. Papaya

Papaya is one of the fruits to avoid during pregnancy, as it may stimulate the body temperature to increase, which is not good. Also, as papayas are rich in latex, they can cause bleeding, uterine contractions, and miscarriage. Ripe and unripe papaya, both must be avoided.

6. Frozen Berries

Pregnant women should avoid frozen berries and other frozen fruits. It is always advisable to consume fresh fruits, especially berries. Frozen berries may lose their nutritional value and can be toxic for both the mother and the child.
